Litchfield National Park

27th May 2013

Another rise at day break, except that because we were now in the Territory it as 7am in the morning, a sleep in for all of us.So after breakfast and a pack down we hit the road bound for Litchfield National Park.

After about an hour we made it to Katherine where we only made a brief fuel stop, as we are coming back through this way after seeing Litchfield NP, Darwin & Kakadu NP, so we plan to do some more exploring then.

After that brief stop, we continued along the Stuart Highway and after a stop for lunch made our way into Batchelor, which is a tiny little town on the gateway to Litchfield NP. Again we had a brief stop, gathered some information on Litchfield from the information centre, posted some letters and also checked out the miniature castle which was built by a former resident in the 70's, before heading into the park.

Batchelor Castle

We made our way to Wangi Falls, some 60km from Batchelor, stopping at the magnetic & cathedral termite mounds, which were very impressive!

Wangi falls is the only camping area in the NP able to take a campervan and we only just managed to get a spot there. After parking up, in a pretty tight spot I must say, we set up quickly and were amazed at how close this awesome waterfall was to the camp site, so much so that the girls could see the top of the falls from there bed in the van, awesome!

We decided to walk to Wangi Falls, which is normally an area safe for swimming, however at the moment was closed due to recent rains flushing a crocodile into the freshwater pool, the reason it was closed is that park rangers could not be sure if it was a fresh or salt water croc, bugger!

Wangi Falls is just beautiful and was a sensational way to start our visit to Litchfield. There was an excellent walk which climbed to the top of the falls, through a mini rainforest, which is amazing in itself, before walking right across the top of the falls and back down the other side.

We returned to the van, very satisfied with our Litchfield initiation and very excited with what tomorrow might bring?
